<<Back to Article National Association of Government Contractors www.governmentcontractors.org Judicial group formed to evaluate federal contracting law Sep 14, 2009 A new group will evaluate the government contract qualifications and experience of applicants, and make recommendations, for appointments to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Federal Claims, according to Judge (Ret.) Ruth C. Burg, Chair of the new organization. The group, named the Government Contact Law Judges Committee, is composed of ten members, all lawyers in private practice. Burg explained that the views of government lawyers can be submitted by the Department of Justice, and lawyers in other practice areas also provide input to the nomination process. She said that even the Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit has stated publically that more judges with government contract law experience are needed. Both the Federal Circuit and the Court of Federal Claims differ from the other courts, Burg said, in that they have national geographic jurisdiction, but the jurisdiction is limited to specific subject matters, including patents, trademarks, government contracts, international trade, and veterans' claims. Many of these cases involve highly specialized areas of law in which considerable experience and expertise are needed. Burg said one or more vacancies in these courts may occur soon, and anyone interested in applying for the position is invited to contact the Committee.
